A rising star on the Swiss art scene, Maya Rochat (Lausanne, 1985) is best known for her colourful three-dimensional installations. Created through a complex process involving several stages of craft and technology, these pictorial images attempt to immerse the viewer in a sensory experience that allows the work's comprehension dimension to be cancelled out in favour of the sensory experience. Familiar with organic images recreating artefacts from the natural world, the iconography of Maya Rochat's work is akin to images of rocks, magma and galaxies. Her large-scale installations also aim to address and isolate certain contemporary concerns and aspirations, such as awareness of the influence of images on humans, the impact of the individual on the environment, and the quest for well-being.
For QG, Maya Rochat has approached the exhibition from two angles. On the one hand, the artist is trying to bring together the framework conditions that the aesthetics of the works and the scenography must fulfil to make the viewer feel in a safe place that encourages reverie and a contemplative state. To this end, and in a partisan manner, it recreates a coloured artificial mirror of a natural environment. On the other hand, she invites reflection and practice with the injunction Breathe motherf***** , a title taken from a breathing method that aims to break one's own limits, which the artist has been able to experiment with over the last few months and which she wishes to share with the viewer. Created during the period of confinement, the works on show reflect the artist's commitment to the issues of the ‘present moment’ and the importance of the role of artists as messengers of collective intuitions.
